Jim Boulanger
Jim Boulanger enters his 23rd season as coordinator of the men and women's cross country and track and field program. In his tenure at UNH the program has produced 20 individual New England champions, seven ICAAAA honorees, three All-Americans, and 8 NCAA regional qualifiers.
Boulanger is currently in the midst of one of the most prolific runs of success in UNH Athletics history. Over the last 34 America East Championships in cross country, indoor track and outdoor track, the Wildcat mentor has guided his men's teams to 12 first-place finishes, 12 second places and six thirds. He won America East "Coach of the Year" for outdoor track during the 1990 and 1996-1999 seasons along with winning the award for indoor track in 1995, 1997, 1998 and 2000. His most recent success came during the 2006 cross country season in which he guided the squad to an America East Championship, which was their fourth title since 2001.
A 1975 graduate of UNH, Jim took over the program in 1982 after serving three years as an assistant.
While serving as an assistant coach for UNH, Jim coached at Oyster River high school in Durham, NH. As the coach he led his teams to titles in 1975-1981. Although his stay was short his impact on New Hampshire Track and Field was tremendous. He has recruited many of New Hampshire’s best athletes.
Tom Jennings
Very few people involved in New Hampshire track and field have ever had as much influence on the growth of the sport as Tom Jennings. After serving as the Executive Director and Coach of the Pacific Coast Track Club, one of the premier track and field clubs in the United States, Tom took over a Hanover track and field program that had wonderful athletes but no direction. From 1981-1992, Coach Jennings created one the best programs in the state. He guided the Marauders to a total of 10 outdoor championships over 7 seasons (7 girls and 3 boys). In 1983 he led his boys’ team to the class I, M and S indoor title, and in 1990 his girls won the indoor title, besting all of the classes. During his tenure in New Hampshire he helped to guide the Connecticut Valley Conference, one of the country’s oldest high school leagues which dates back to the 1890’s, by expanding its membership to include larger schools such as Keene. That move elevated most of the programs along the river basin to be contenders for state titles on both sides of the river. Jennings served on the NHIAA outdoor track and field committee for four years. In 1998, he was named New Hampshire’s boys track and field coach of the year, and in 1986 and 1991 he received the girls coach of the year awards, as well.
Tom Jenning’s mark on track and field can be felt world wide. During his tenure with the Pacific Coast Track Club, he helped to guide his program to National Championships in Cross Country and two national indoor championships. In 1993 Tom became the President of Flash Results, the USA’s premier athletic timing company. Here is a partial list of the meets Jennings has been race director for :
In addition, Tom Jennings has coordinated the Goodwill Games in Moscow and Seattle. His media credentials are just as impressive. Working for ABC, NBC, and TBS, Jennings has brought into our homes the indoor and outdoor Track and Field World Championships and the Olympic Games.
In 1977, Tom Jennings was inducted into the United States Track and Field Federation Hall of Fame. Today, Tom Jennings is being inducted into the New Hampshire Track and Field Coaches Association’s Hall of Fame. Unfortunately, he cannot be here today because he and his son Roger are timing the NCAA regional championship in Eugene Oregon. Accepting the award is former Hanover athlete and current Lebanon High School track and field coach, Andrew Gamble.
Larry Martin
Growing up in Claremont, Larry Martin is a true New Hampshire Native. While attending Stevens High School he was the Class I individual Cross Country Champion. At the University of New Hampshire, Mr. Martin ran for legendary coach Paul Sweet. Coach Sweet was instrumental in molding Larry as a coach. At UNH Mr. Martin set the school record in the 2-mile which lasted for 7 years. From 1970-1978, he became the coach at Raymond High School and won a total of 8 NHIAA Class M Championships (4 in cross country, 2 in indoor track and field and 2 in outdoor track and field.
In 1978, Larry Martin began coaching at Londonderry High School, which at the time was a NHIAA Class I school. He guided his teams to 7 Cross Country titles, 3 New England titles, and 11 spring track and field titles.
The success of the New Hampshire indoor track and field league can be attributed to Larry’s guidance. He has been the director of the league for 30 years. During this time, the league has grown from 12 boys’ teams to over 50 boys and girls teams. In addition, Mr. Martin has steered the New Hampshire Junior High State Cross Country Championships for 30 + years, and now has over 2000 athletes run in that meet every year.
